Punjab Education Dept Considers Reducing School Holidays to Improve Academic Standards

LAHORE (Education Reporter) – The School Education Department is considering a proposal to reduce school holidays and eliminate Saturday offsets to ensure timely syllabus completion and improve student performance.

Representative bodies of private schools have formally requested the department to extend the academic year to at least 180 functional days. Qazi Naeem Anjum, head of Pak Aiwan-e-Taleem, suggested that summer vacations should be limited to two months, while winter breaks should be restricted to 10 days in January.

Key Highlights of the Proposal:

  • Current Challenge: According to Qazi Naeem Anjum, schools remained functional for only 127 days during the last academic year due to unscheduled holidays, causing significant hurdles in completing the curriculum.
  • Saturday Holiday: There is a strong recommendation to abolish the Saturday holiday to recover the educational deficit.
  • Summer Camps: Private school representatives have also demanded permission to organize summer camps to compensate for lost instructional time.

The School Education Department has assured the stakeholders that these demands will be considered sympathetically to maintain high educational standards across the province.
