Matter Enters Crucial Phase; Final Policy to Be Formulated Based on Recommendations from VCs, Police, and Stakeholders
Framework for Democratic Activities, Law & Order, and Discipline to Be Developed Through Mutual Consultation
PESHAWAR (Education Reporter) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has made significant progress regarding the potential restoration of student unions in educational institutions by seeking detailed reports and proposals from the Vice-Chancellors of public universities, police officials, and other relevant departments. A final policy regarding the reinstatement of these unions will be structured based on the recommendations received from these authorities.
Following the provincial government’s announcement to restore student representative organizations, practical steps have officially commenced. In this regard, opinions have been sought from relevant institutions concerning campus security, discipline, electoral procedures, and the potential impact of the move.
Past Concerns and Government’s Stance
It is worth noting that in the past, Vice-Chancellors of certain universities expressed reservations over the restoration of student unions. They argued that tension and clashes between different student student factions could severely disrupt academic activities. Historically, such conflicts have resulted in damage to university property, injuries to numerous students, and in some tragic instances, the loss of precious lives.
However, the provincial government maintains that a comprehensive framework will be established in light of consultations and recommendations from all stakeholders. This mechanism aims to provide students with ample opportunities to participate in democratic activities while strictly maintaining law, order, and discipline within educational institutions.
